SCUBA Lessons in the Yasawas

This morning we raised anchor and sailed 10-12 miles to a new location ideal for Michelle’s first scuba lesson. We outfitted her in Mike’s gear and Anouk took her into shallow water with a sandy bottom to practice the necessary skills. Michelle was a star pupil and picked up the techniques right away, so she soon graduated to a real dive. Back in the dinghy we went out to an underwater wall (just what it sounds like – a wall of coral which rises to within just a few feet of the surface from the ocean floor which in this case was maybe 20 meters below the surface). It was a beautiful spot, loaded with small fish, and we went on a leisurely scuba dive along the wall. I had my video camera again and took 30 minutes or so of footage as we cruised along. I’ll try editing the footage in the iMac and make a DVD of some of our experiences. I have a great wipeout shot of Mike failing (again) at skurfing!

As usual we are feasting like kings enjoying Anouk’s cooking – first night out was Tandoori chicken and curried brown rice; last night was teriyaki steak and salad. Last night was movie night as well. We watched an old movie called “Captain Ron” which is especially fun for sailors as it is an outragious comedy (Kurt Russell starring) about novice sailors and their unorthodox skipper. We use the iMac for movie watching, bringing it up on deck and hooking it into the boat stereo system, so we can sit comfortably in the pilot house in the nice evening air while we watch DVDs.
