Scratch that “perfect weather” comment on Day 1! Hurricane Flossie passed close enough to Hawaii that we spent most of yesterday battening down the boat and making sure we would withstand any high winds that came along. Fortunately the hurricane fizzled out and, although it was a breezy day gusting up to 30 knots or so, the preparation was the extent of our excitement.

Michelle flew home last night to start getting ready for her next horse show, and Eric and Drew moved into the Marriott Ihilani next door, as Peggy got them a free room for a couple of nights and we thought the boat might be noisy and uncomfortable if the weather really did get windy and rainy. Actually it turned out to be placid and peaceful and we had a good night’s sleep.

More wind on Wednesday, and a tsunami alert as a result of the 8.0 quake in Peru. In addition there has been a huge wildfire on the north coast, burning some 5,000 acres, the volcano Kilauea on the Big Island has been more active than usual, and the Big Island has also enjoyed a moderate earthquake or two since our arrival. Hanging out around these islands is really an adventure!
